Flexible Power for Working Farms

The Gallagher MBS400 can operate from mains electricity, an external 12V battery or a compatible solar system. This flexibility makes it suitable for permanent installations, remote paddocks and properties where battery backup may be useful.

Understanding the 30km Rating

The advertised 30km distance represents a clean, well-constructed fence operating under ideal conditions. Gallagher’s recommendation of up to 8km of multiwire fencing is generally a more practical guide for working farm conditions.

Vegetation touching the live wires, inadequate earthing, damaged insulators, poor joins, unsuitable conductors and long lead-out distances can all increase the electrical load and reduce effective fence performance.

Suitable Livestock and Applications

The MBS400 can be used for cattle, sheep, horses, goats and other livestock when it is matched to an appropriately designed fence. Its additional power capacity makes it a practical option for multi-paddock systems, rotational grazing and longer permanent fence runs.

For short, clean paddock fences, a smaller energiser may be sufficient. Properties with extensive fence networks, significant vegetation pressure or future expansion may benefit from choosing an energiser with additional reserve capacity.

Solar Panel Positioning and Battery Care

Install the solar panel where it receives strong, uninterrupted sunlight throughout the day. Avoid shade from trees, buildings and machinery, particularly during winter when daylight hours are shorter.

The supplied regulator controls power flowing to the battery. The MBS400’s smart battery-management system also helps protect the external battery from damaging over-discharge. Regular battery inspection and maintenance are still important for dependable operation.

Correct Earthing Is Essential

An effective earth system allows the electrical pulse to travel through the animal and return to the energiser. Without adequate earthing, even a powerful MBS400 may produce a weak shock along the fence.

Install suitable galvanised earth stakes in permanently moist soil. Dry, sandy or rocky conditions may require additional stakes or an earth-return fence design. Keep the electric-fence earth system separated from building earths and underground services.
