Thunderbird SOLA-120 Solar Kit for Off-Grid Electric Fencing
The Thunderbird SOLA-120 solar kit helps keep a compatible electric fence energiser operating where mains electricity is unavailable. Its 12-watt solar panel uses sunlight to maintain a suitable rechargeable 12V battery, reducing the need to regularly remove and manually recharge it.
This listing is for the solar kit only. The electric fence energiser and battery are not included.
Why Choose the Thunderbird SOLA-120 Solar Kit?
- 12-watt solar-panel capacity
- Designed for compatible Thunderbird electric fence energisers
- Supports off-grid electric fence operation
- Helps maintain a suitable rechargeable 12V battery
- Reduces time spent changing or manually charging batteries
- Suitable for smaller permanent and temporary electric fences
- Practical for remote paddocks and rotational grazing
- Designed for Australian rural conditions
Compatible Electric Fence Energisers
The Thunderbird SOLA-120 solar kit is intended for selected lower-consumption Thunderbird battery and multi-power energisers. Check the energiser model and its recommended solar-panel size before ordering or installation.
The panel must be correctly matched to the energiser’s current consumption and the battery capacity. A panel that is too small may not replace all the energy used during cloudy weather, short winter days or periods of heavy fence load.
Choosing a Suitable 12V Battery
The panel maintains the battery that powers the energiser; it does not replace the battery. Use a suitable rechargeable 12V deep-cycle or marine battery in good working condition.
An old, damaged or undersized battery may fail to hold sufficient charge even when the solar equipment is functioning correctly. Keep the terminals clean, secure and protected from corrosion.
Positioning the 12-Watt Solar Panel
Install the panel in an open area that receives direct sunlight throughout the day. In Australia, a north-facing position will generally provide the strongest year-round solar exposure.
Avoid shade from trees, buildings, posts and other equipment. Mount the panel securely at a suitable angle and follow the correct polarity and connection order when connecting the panel, battery and energiser.
Maintaining Your Solar Charging System
- Keep the panel clean and free from dust, leaves and bird droppings
- Check mounting hardware regularly
- Inspect cables for damage, loose connections or corrosion
- Monitor the battery’s condition and charge level
- Test the electric fence voltage regularly
- Remove vegetation contacting the live fence wires
Solar charging cannot compensate for excessive power loss caused by heavy vegetation, damaged insulators, poor wire joins or inadequate earthing.
